ABOLISHMENT OF DATA PROTECTION

Imagine a world where everyone wears high-tech contact lenses that show all kinds of information about the person they’re facing: Name, family status, profession, income, state of health – everything is monitored by the government that claims to make the world a better place with this technology.

THE MAN OF GLASS

In eight minutes, this short film shows the world in a data frenzy. Personal information has no value anymore. The contact lenses augment everyday life through holographic projections and show information about people and the environment. These holograms (“holo”) serve as the “sixth sense” (“sense”). Data protection and online anonymity no longer exist in this world.

TOTAL SURVEILLANCE

The man of glass has no secrets anymore. Everyone has a “public Facebook” that is available to all. According to the government, the concept of the “Man of Glass” guarantees security for all people since criminals have no way of hiding secrets or themselves.

THE TEAM

We, four students of the University of Applied Sciences Kiel, developed the concept for the short film in the class “How real is the future?”. We had in-depth discussions about the digital future and how it would affect not only us, but also the next generations. In addition to topics such as the fast progress in technology, robotics, overpopulation and unemployment, we also dealt with the subject of data protection and its future.

IDEA AND CONCEPT

DATA PROTECTION

WHAT COMES AFTER SOCIAL MEDIA?

In times of WhatsApp and Facebook scandals the topic of data protection is a growing concern to the general public. However, what is data protection and why is it so important?
The law provides the right for every citizen to decide about their own personal data. It protects not the data itself, but the liberty of the people to decide for themselves about who should know what about them.
How will our society develop if social media is one day followed by complete surveillance and no secret can be kept from anyone? What could everyday situations look like when everyone knows everything about each other without ever speaking a single word? HoloSense deals with these questions and gives a glimpse of a dystopian future that could one day become a reality if we continue to share all of our personal information online and don’t pay attention to the importance of data protection.

PRODUCTION

Joachim Perschbacher

DIRECTOR OF NORTHDOCKS

Thanks to the support of the Art Foundation of the HSH Nordbank, the concept of “HoloSense – All Eyes on You” was professionally produced by the company „Northdocks GmbH“ and is available for 360° fulldome projections and VR-glasses.

“HoloSense gave us the unique possibility to critically question the technologies that we provide for our clients on a daily basis. We were also able to cinematically simulate many theoretical concepts between Virtual Reality, Fulldome and Augmented Reality”, says Joachim Perschbacher, director of Northdocks.

What is the meaning of “Earth 4.0” in the life of young people? In the idea competition “How real is the future? – Digitalisation affects generations” twelve students of the University of Applied Sciences Kiel developed film concepts for immersive media in 360° — media that allow the illusion of being “inside” the film.

During the first phase of the project, the following concepts were developed:
-“Insignis – The Babyeditor” by Antonia Hauschlid, Sebastian Scholz, Alexandra Metz, Cora Braun, Marie Kristen and Phillip Schwarz
-“Future Job” by Nico Kuhn and Mats Claessen
-“HoloSense” by Karim Aloulou, Mira Haack, Jasmin Meziou and Sophie Schweitzer

Thanks to the support of the Art Foundation of the HSH Nordbank, the concept of “HoloSense – All Eyes on You” was able to be professionally produced in the second phase by the company „Northdocks GmbH“ and is available for 360° fulldome projections and VR-glasses.

Torsten Temp

CHAIRMAN OF CURATORSHIP OF THE ART FOUNDATION AND MEMBER OF THE MANAGEMENT BOARD OF THE HSH NORDBANK

“With “HoloSense – All Eyes on You” the students succeeded at creating an impressive short film about the future of the constant mobile availability of the people. This film shows us that we can’t be careful enough with the topics of data protection and personal rights”, said Torsten Temp, chairman of the curatorship of the art foundation and member of the management board of the HSH Nordbank.

Eduard Thomas

LECTURER AND CURATOR OF THE PROJECT

“The ethical discussion about the digital future will be affected by the way that our society is able to imagine the impact of the possible technological progress. Therefore, I’m very thankful that the art foundation of the HSH Nordbank allowed for this medial immersion into the future”, says Eduard Thomas, lecturer and curator of the project. “In addition to that, it is a unique learning experience for the studetns to be able to be part of the development of such an ambitious project.
